Jay’s Brian Watson Couldn’t Pass Up Opportunity

12/10—-When head Jay softball coach Brian Watson was deciding on whether to become the new girls’ basketball coach at Jay High School, the decision was easy. Although taking the job meant more hours in the gym, Watson was already an assistant boys basketball coach, the group of players that are on the team made the decision easy. “I always thought I would end up coaching girls basketball again. I didn’t expect the opportunity to happen now, but to be able to coach this group, I could not pass it up,” Watson said.

The long time, ultra successful JHS Softball Coach, including 8 district titles and two trips to the state championship game, has a long history of coaching basketball, including 10 years of being an assistant coach, 7 of which at Jonesboro High school in Georgia. Watson, who also serves as the offensive coordinator for the Royals’ football team, sees the potential in this group and has them off to a great start. The Lady Royals are 3-1 thus far in the season and are 2-0 in district play with wins over rivals Baker and Northview.

As far as what fans can expect out of his team, Watson says he wants to see a quick and aggressive team and he knows this group is capable of doing just that. “We will be more of an up-tempo team. We will push the ball up the court and press and play more man-to-man defense than past teams.”

If the present is any indication of the future, things look bright for the Lady Royals.

Jay is in action on Monday at Freeport (district game) and host the annual Christmas Tournament on Thursday and Friday.
