District 1 Cross Country Race Recap: Jay, Central runners advance

The 2016 District 1 Cross Country Championships were held at Sims Middle School in Pace, October 22nd. As a result, several runners will represent local schools in today’s Regional Championships.
     Maya Espinosa of Baker High School was the girls champion with a 5K time of 19:32. Her sister, Gabriela was second in 20:34. Jay High runners, Jillian Thornton finished 4th in 22:00 and Hannah Whitlock ran 22:17 to finish in 6th place. Both Thornton and Whitlock will represent the Royals in the regional championships in Pensacola. Central’s Christine Clark also advanced with a 10th place finish in 24:06. The girl’s team champion was Baker High School with 33 points, followed by Pensacola Christian Academy with 34 points. Paxton (78), Rocky Bayou (97), and Northview (128) rounded out the full team scores. The Top 3 teams will advance to the regional meet at the Escambia County Equestrian Center on Friday afternoon, October 28th.

     In the boy’s race, Timothy Stewart continued his winning ways by taking the individual district championship in 17:04. Northview’s Brandon Korinchak finished 3rd with 18:29. And Northview teammate Tanner Levins was 6th in 19:21. Central High School had two qualifiers in Daniel Griswold (10th place in 19:39) and Dalton Lewis (14th in 19:52). Jay’s Austin Gonzalez missed qualifying by two places. He finished 17th with a time of 20:06.

     The Top 3 Boys teams will advance to regional competition. Pensacola Christian Academy (41), Paxton (51), Northview (81), Baker (93), Central (103), and Rocky Bayou (137).
