The Santa Rosa Sound Great Scallop Search

If you are a snorkeler, or if you have a boat and want to contribute to a scientific survey to determine if there is a scallop population in the Santa Rosa Sound, Join us for the 1st Annual Santa Rosa Sound Great Scallop Search!!

Florida Sea Grant is looking for volunteers with boats and volunteer snorkelers to participate in a one day scallop count in Santa Rosa Sound on Saturday, August 1 from 8 a.m. until noon. The great scallop search is being held to determine if there are scallops in the Pensacola Bay System. Volunteers will need to work in teams with a boat captain and 3-4 people to conduct the surveys. Survey areas are 1 nm2, 4 transects will be surveyed in each area. There is not a recreational harvest of scallops in our area, so this will be a non-harvest event. The Santa Rosa Sound Great Scallop Search is a great activity for the whole family!

Snorkelers will snorkel 50 meter transects in an assigned 1 nm2 grid in the Santa Rosa Sound. Fl. Sea Grant will loan supplies needed to conduct the surveys. Volunteers will need to provide their own snorkel gear. This event is limited to 40 teams and all captains and volunteers are required to pick up survey equipment and information Friday, July 31 between 4 and 6:30 p.m. at:

Holley by the Sea Recreation Center
Pavilion 1
6848 Navarre Pkwy
