SRC Health Department Observes Flu Vaccination Week

SANTA ROSA COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT OBSERVES

NATIONAL INFLUENZA VACCINATION WEEK

December 2-8, 2012

Milton, FL – During National Influenza Vaccination Week, December 2-8, the Santa Rosa County Health Department would like to encourage everyone to help prevent the flu by getting a seasonal flu shot.  The seasonal flu vaccine is one of the easiest and safest ways to protect yourself and your family from the flu.

The flu is a respiratory infection caused by viruses.  Symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches and headaches.  Anyone can get the flu, but those most at risk are the elderly, young children, pregnant women, and individuals with chronic medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes and heard disease.  The illness can be mild, and people will recover in a few days, or it can be serious, causing pneumonia or bronchitis and making chronic conditions worse.  In the most serious cases, it can be fatal.

The vaccine is recommended for everyone over the age of six months.  The Santa Rosa County Health Department still has flu vaccine available for a fee of $20.00.  Medicare will pay for flu shots for those who are eligible.

For additional information on the flu and more tips on how to help prevent it, visit the Santa Rosa County Health Department website at http://healthysantarosa.com/influenza.html.
