Jay and Chumuckla Elementary – “B” Schools
The Florida Department of Education has released school grades. As Florida continues efforts to raise school performance, the state’s school grades are being calculated using more rigorous standards and new achievement levels. According to the 2012 school grades report for elementary, middle and some combination schools released July 11 by the Florida Department of Education, 89 percent of schools (2,301) earned an A, B, or C grade and 11 percent (285) earned a D or F grade.
Santa Rosa ranks at the top of the state in performance. Below you will find the school grades as released July 11, 2012. “I applaud the work of teachers and administrators to produce such amazing results”, said Tim Wyrosdick, Santa Rosa County Superintendent.
Both Jay Elementary and Chumuckla Elementary received a “B” in the school grade. East Milton Elementary was the only “C” in the county. The high school and combination school grades have not been released. With 20 schools reporting the county breaks down with 13 “A”’s; 6 “B”’s; and 1 “C”. This is exceptional and keeps Santa Rosa County ranking in the top of the State of Florida.
“Obviously any time that our school falls below an A we are concerned and certainly disappointed. We were excited to have moved from a C to an A during the 2010-2011 school year, and we had hoped that we would maintain that status for the 2011-2012 year as well. With the new cut scores, it will be a challenge to move into A status this upcoming school year; however, I am confident that with the remarkable staff, students, and parent support that we have at JES, we are more than capable of reaching this goal. Regardless of the school grade, I am so proud to be a part of the JES family.” said Mr. Carnley, principal of JES.
“This has been a year of tremendous change for Florida’s students, teachers, and schools,” said Commissioner of Education Gerard Robinson. “Florida’s economic future depends on preparing our students for success. The high standards we have in place today will help our students prepare for college, the workforce and life. I am confident that we are on the right path to prepare our students to compete with the best in the nation and around the world.”
Florida has raised expectations for school grades five times in the past ten years. The results show that after an initial drop, school grades improved consistently in the years that followed. As Florida moves toward implementing the Common Core State Standards in 2014-15, the progress seen over the next few years will smooth the transition to the more challenging standards.
