Summer Lightening Strikes

During the summer months there are many lightening strikes.  What you should know if you are caught outside in a lightening storm.  While deaths from lightening have decreased it is still one of the top three storm-related killers in the United States.  With only 29 deaths in 2010 but 182 injuries associated with lightening it is dangerous and you should be prepared. Most lightning victims survive, but they often suffer with lingering and critical conditions.

  • Never lie on the ground.
  • You want to minimize your contact with the ground.
  • Seek shelter in a low area under a thick growth of small trees
  • In a open area -seek the lowest place
  • Squat Low to the ground just on the balls of your feet.
  • Duck you head
  • Place your hands over your ears
