Fatal Accident on I-10
A fatal accident occurred on Thursday, June 7, 2012 on the section of I-10 between Avalon and Scenic Hwy. A 1999 GMC driven by Niela Johnson, 28, carrying 4 passengers, overturned killing one. The accident happened around 11:40 in the morning, closing the Interstate for about an hour. All of the occupants of the SUV were from Pensacola.
The SUV was traveling westbound within the outside travel lane of Interstate-10. According to Johnson, as
she attempted to change lanes, she lost control of her vehicle and it begin to rotate counter clockwise.
Traveling in a west, northwesterly direction into the grass median, Vehicle-1 begins to overturn serveral
times. The Vehicle continued to overturn across the westbound lanes and onto the north shoulder where it came to final rest next to the wood line, on its wheels, while facing a westerly direction.
Ladarius Drayton, 10, of Pensacola was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS and the Florida Hwy Patrol. Annasha Drayton, 12, and Alyili Fields,11, were both transported to Scared Heart Hospital in serious condition. Talacius Campbell, 27 also a passenger was taken to Scared Heart in serious condition.
According to the Florida Hwy Patrol all of the vehicle’s occupants except Annasha had their seatbelts on at the time of the accident. As of today an investigation is underway and no charges have been filed.
