Lifeguards Become Certified First Responders
For the first time, Navarre Beach Lifeguards will be certified First Responders, allowing them to provide greater pre-hospital care for medical emergencies. While not a substitute for emergency medical technicians or hospital staff, the Navarre Beach lifeguards will now have greater knowledge and enhanced skills to administer advanced first aid quickly after an emergency when minutes and even seconds can make a difference in the patient’s ability to fully recover. The lead lifeguards are the first group to participate in the training with the goal of the entire lifeguard staff completing the 40-hour training by the end of May, in time for the start of the peak beach season. Lifeguards are also required to hold current lifeguard certification, CPR certification, and pass a swim and agility test.
The three lead lifeguards are expected to complete the F irst R esponder c ertification on Wednesday, Apr. 18 after a hands-on final practical exam that include s responding to three separate patient scenarios. To make the exercise true to life, Navarre Beach Fire Department and Lifeguard Ambulance Service will also participate. The first responder training was provided by Santa Rosa County Emergency Management and Lifeguard Ambulance Service staff.
