Royals fall in district game to Northview

Royals fall in District game to the Northview Chiefs.

Jay fans came to Merle V. North Stadium Friday night hopeful.  Hopeful at least that the Royals would give their rival the Northivew Chiefs a good game.  That hope was short lived when Northview received the opening kick-off and drove down the field to score in five plays on a drive that took only one and one-half minutes off the clock. Even though the Royals suffered a humiliating loss, one bright spot was sophomore, Ricky Cofield’s 119 yards rushing put him over 1000 yards for the season, which is quite an accomplishment in only 6 games. Ricky is averaging 177 yards a game.

Next Jay went three and out and then Northview quarterback, Brandon Sheets, on a broken play fumbled the ball, run backwards 20 yards, finally got a grip on the ball, turned up field and ran 83 yards untouched by a Royal all the way to the end zone.  It was a crazy play, that made the score 14-0 and set the tone for the evening.

Jay started its 2nd possession on their 37 yard line after a facemask penalty against the Chiefs. Sophomore quarterback, Tate Upton, had two well executed pass plays. The first to #2, Sammy James, for 9 yards plus a screen pass to #42, Allen Perry, for 13 yards and a first down.  The Royals came up short and turned the ball over on downs at the Chiefs 36 yard line.  The Chiefs took the ball down the field in 10 plays and Sheets scored again from 10 yards out to advanced the lead to 21-0.

A penalty on the kick-off return put Jay in a hole with 2:18 left in the first. Working from their  14 yard line the Royals only managed to move the ball five yards and had to punt.  The punt was short and Northview had good field position on their  43. Sheets passed to #2, La’Mikal Kyles for 13 yards and then on a quarterback keeper ran 30 yards to score his fourth touchdown of the first quarter.  The PAT was good and the score was 28-0.

The Northview Chiefs continued to build a comfortable lead in the 2nd quarter.  The Royals were unable to stop them from moving the ball and the Chiefs lead at the half was 42-0.

Northview  kicked the ball to Jay to start the second half.  Ricky Cofield had an impressive run for 60 yards but it was called back because of a block below the waist.  The drive stalled and Jay punted the ball.  The Chiefs quickly came back with a 57 yard run down to the Royal 13 yard line.  In two plays they scored and brought the score to 49-0.

Tristan Pengenika, helped the boost the Royals with a incredible blocked punt that rolled into the end zone and was recovered by #18, Justice Garcia for the lone Royal touchdown.  The PAT  by Conner Weekes was good.  With 10:38 left in the game the score was 49-7.

The Chiefs answered when #2, Kyles, returned the kick-off all the way to the end zone for a touchdown.  Making the final score 56-7.

The Royals took one on the chin tonight but with many underclassmen on the team the future for Jay looks bright.  Jay will go on the road  to Cottondale next Friday.
