JHS Tennis
Students at Jay High will have a new opportunity to be on the initial tennis team at Jay. The FHSAA approved JHS to have a boys and girls tennis team. Coach Melvin Kersey feels “tennis is a game you can play the majority of your life. A great sport to keep you fit.” Over 50 students came out for an awareness only meeting to see if there was enough interest at JHS. Lance Youngblood, athletic director, worked to make this opportunity possible. The season for Tennis will begin in February 2012. The first season the teams will play an independent schedule and not be included in district standings. Coach Kersey thinks there will be about 10 tournaments (matches). This will be a varsity sport only with around 12 students on each team. Support from the community and the Quarterback will be needed to build this program. The Town of Jay is seeking assistance in resurfacing the courts for home matches. The team will need uniforms, rackets, balls, nets and possibly a tennis ball machine.
