Oktoberfest in Perdido Key this Friday and Saturday

Enjoy traditional German food, beer and music, along with fun games, at the Perdido Key Oktoberfest Friday and Saturday (Oct. 5-6).

The games, German in origin, put the accent on enjoyment for individuals, families and groups alike.

There’s the Keg Roll, won by the contestant who rolls the keg through the race course faster than his competitors.

In the Stein Race, competitors must weigh speed versus steadiness. They run around an obstacle course – steins of beer in each hand. The race is not just to the swiftest but to the one who is both swiftest and least sloppy. Each ounce of spilled beer adds one second to a competitor’s time.

Another competition is the “Brat Toss,” in which teams of two play catch with bratwurst.

The games are in addition to the food, music and beer. Entrance to the festival is free.

Those who want to sample beer can purchase a $20 wristband in exchange for 10 tickets, 1 ticket per sample—or trade in 3 tickets for a full beer mug sample. Additional tickets can be purchased at the gate.

Oktoberfest will be at 13200 Gulf Beach Highway, the former Sacred Heart Soccer Fields near the Winn-Dixie Shopping Center. Winn Dixie is sponsoring the kid’s area, which will feature a “root beer garden” and bounce house.
