North Santa Rosa

History and Heritage Come To Life Oct. 13 & 14

History, heritage come to life Oct. 13 & 14

Ways of life gone by and the “good ol’ days” are making a reemergence the second weekend of October, as they always do, at Krul Recreation Area for the Munson Community Heritage Festival. Not a mile east of the Munson crossroads (Highway 4 and County Road 191), Krul Lake is a pristine backdrop to what has become one of Santa Rosa County’s signature events, drawing more than 5,000 people every year during its nine-year history.

In addition to the staple historic and heritage displays – chair caning, the Reed Family syrup works, the grist mill, and more – there will be new additions to this year’s festival that are sure spark an interest in an even wider audience.

The music stage will see Dread Clampitt – an acclaimed regional act out of Grayton Beach that draws influences ranging from bluegrass, rock & roll, blues, jazz and Louisiana Bayou funk. Dread will perform Saturday (Oct. 13) from 2 to 4 p.m. and headlines two solid days of country, bluegrass, gospel and blues acts set to perform.

Also new for 2012 is the Scott’s Outdoor Sports Archery competition. Limited to the first 50 entrants, the contest course will wind through the woods of Blackwater River State Forest near the festival site. Archers will shoot at 15 targets as they progress from station to station with the highest three scores receiving cash and prizes. There is a $20 entry for the contest.

Not to forget the children, there is an expanded set of offerings for the youngsters in the crowd. The Florida Forest Service is hosting a game and activity center with a wildfire prevention theme that features skee ball, ring toss, basketball game and more.

Along with the new, of course, will be the traditions. Great food, fabulous music and the picturesque setting that is Krul Lake.
