Lady Royals Win Season Opener
Tuesday-The Lady Royals went on the road to Freeport (1-1) and came back with a 64-54 win. After going 1-1 in preseason play last week, the official schedule started this week and the defending 1-1A District Champions made the most of it.
The Lady Royals came out on fire in the first quarter, scoring 22. While the offense was clicking, the Lady Royals defensively gave up some easy buckets and committed some unnecessary fouls, allowing the Bulldogs to score 17.
Jay would out score Freeport again in the 2nd quarter, extending their lead to 49-28.
Freeport would not go away, however, and took advantage of more costly fouls committed by the Lady Royals, making 17 free throws on the night. The Bulldogs actually would tie the game, late in the third quarter, briefly, during their 19-8 3rd quarter run.
Faced with multiple players in foul trouble, head coach Jorey Diamond had to go to his bench early and often through the night.
“Darcy Locklin came off the bench and gave us great minutes tonight,” Diamond stated after the game. “She really helped the team.”
The Lady Royals would take back control in the fourth, holding Freeport to only seven points.
“We made a lot of mistakes tonight but the good news is everything is correctible. I’d much rather learn from mistakes after a win than after a loss,” stated Diamond.
Next up for Jay is next Tuesday on the road at Chipley.
