North Santa Rosa

District Champs!

Paxton-The Lady Royals (18-3) defeated Paxton (17-9) 52-32 for the District 1A Championship. The win marks the 6th win in a row for Jay.

Paxton came out on fire on their home court. Abbie Davis hit two quick 3’s for the Bobcats, but the young Lady Royals quickly answered. 8th grader Presley Hawthorne hit two 3’s of her own in the first quarter, helping the Lady Royals take a two point lead to end the first quarter, 16-14.

With both Maddie Grimes and Aubreigh Nelson in early first half foul trouble for Jay, head coach Jorey Diamond had to lean on his bench to weather the storm. Not only did the bench come through, but the Lady Royals extended their lead and held Paxton to only four 2nd quarter points.

The Lady Royals defense would stay hungry in the second half, holding Paxton to only 14 total points. Carleigh Baker scored seven 2nd half points, while Maddie Grimes scored six of her ten points in the fourth quarter.

Kaylee Gilbreath, who had 26 in the semi-finals game versus Freeport on Wednesday, lead the way for the Lady Royals with 14.

“I am so proud of these girls,” head coach Diamond stated after the game. “We set a goal this summer to win district and they worked so hard to make that happen. It was truly a team win!”
