Lady Royals Stunned on the Road

The 5th ranked Jay Lady Royals (12-2) were upset at Paxton (10-7) on Tuesday night, 30-29. After pulling a major upset of their own last week, defeating Pace 50-45, Jay never could get into an offensive rhythm against the Bobcats. For the first time all season, Jay’s offense was held to under 30 total points, failing to reach double-digits in any single quarter.

After out scoring Paxton 9-2 in the first quarter, the Bobcats came back and chipped away at the Royals’ lead throughout the game.
“Paxton took it to us and dictated the play all night,” head coach Jorey Diamond stated after the game.

Eighth graders Aubreigh Nelson and Presley Hawthorne led the Royals in scoring, tallying 9 and 8, respectively. But Paxton’s Abbie Davis caught fire for the Bobcats, scoring 15 after being held scoreless in the first quarter.

Jay held a slim 22-19 lead going into the fourth quarter, but Paxton’s Abbie Davis and Hydie Varnum took over and combined to score all of Paxton’s 11 fourth quarter points to edge the Royals.

“We are disappointed with how we played but we will learn from the experience,” Diamond said. The loss is the first road loss of the year for the Royals. On a positive note, after the only other loss for the Lady Royals, at the hands of Pace in December, Jay went on a six game winning streak.
