Lady Royals put Bulldogs to Sleep

Jay-On Tuesday, Jay hosted district foe Freeport and came away with their ninth win of the season. Jay (9-1) had to overcome an uncharacteristic second quarter to propel themselves against a determined and upset-minded Freeport team.

Up 18-11 after the first quarter, the Lady Royals could not buy a bucket in the second, scoring only 4 to Freeport’s 11. But, as we’ve seen thus far this season, when faced with challenges, this young Jay team kept fighting and clawing.

“Tonight was good for us,” head coach Jorey Diamond said after the game. “We had a terrible second quarter and had to overcome some adversity to play better in the second half.”

With the game tied at 22 at halftime, the young Royals were in unfamiliar territory, as so many games this season have been all but decided by intermission. But the underclassmen took control in the third quarter as a more focused team came out of the locker room to put up 18 points to Freeport’s 5.

“Aubreigh (Nelson), Hattie (Locklin) and Kaylee (Gilbreath) really got us going in the second half. Pressley also had a couple of big threes that extended the lead (in the 4th quarter),” Diamond continued.

The Lady Royals would have an even bigger 4th quarter, offensively, scoring 19 to end the game. After being tied at halftime, Jay out scored Freeport 37-17 in the second half.

Kaylee Gilbreath led all scores with 14. Hattie Locklin scored 12 and Aubreigh Nelson added 11.
The Lady Royals won’t be back in action until after the holidays.
