Mid-Week Report with Head Coach Brian Waston
Northsantarosa.com sat down with head football coach Brian Watson with a little Q and A about last Friday’s win over Freeport (24-15) and what to expect this week against Franklin County.
Q-You’ve won over 300 softball games, multiple district and regional championships, and a state championship. Very successful in your tenure as the girls basketball coach here at Jay. What does winning your first game as the head football coach mean to you?
A-It’s a big deal…just where we’ve come from the last couple years. And the fact that it didn’t come easy and we had to fight til the end of the game to win it. It was a big win for us. Our home crowd was big for us. We hope we can continue it.
Q-What unit(s) on your team were you happy with on Friday night against Freeport?
A-The whole defense after the first two possessions…Coach Diamond (Jorey/Defensive Coordinator) made some adjustments. Shut them out after that. 3 interceptions. Offensive lineĀ and backs too. 10 Freeport Bulldogs were in the box and we rushed for 280 yards.
Q-What unit(s) need more work?
A-Kicking game, specifically extra point. That’s on me. We have to spend more time on that and shore up protection.
Q-What challenges does Franklin County present?
A-Franklin County is going to spread us out and try and run the ball and they will, defensively, mirror what Freeport did…that is put 9 or 10 in the box and dare you to throw.
Q-What is the coaching staff focusing on this week at practice?
A-We’re continuing to try and get fundamentally sound, both offense and defense. Spending more time on special teams as well.
