FSU Hangs On…

FSU (2-0) defeated LSU (0-1) in Brian Kelly’s debut, 24-23. FSU controlled the game early, running the ball at will, averaging 5 yards a rush in the first half. Special teams for the ‘Noles proved to be up to the SEC challenge as that unit blocked an LSU field goal, the would-be game tying extra point, and recovered two fumbles on punt team. It would seem that special teams “just means more” to FSU.

Truth be told, LSU should not have had a chance to tie the game though. Up by 7, FSU faced a 2nd and goal from the 1 yard line, but instead of handing the ball off, as they did early in the 3rd quarter to FB Lundy to score a TD, a short-tight-awkward quarterback pitch to the FSU RB resulted in a fumble. Of course, LSU marched down the field and, after a 5 minute official review determined that the Tigers would have a first and goal on the 1. The Tigers would score on the next play, but FSU’s Shyheim Brown blocked the attempt and sealed the deal for the ‘Noles.

FSU’s defense also showed that they have made major progress under much maligned defensive coordinator Cody Fuller from last year. The unit held tight for much of the night, holding LSU to 249 total yards before the final 99 yard drive for LSU.

On the offensive side, FSU’s Jordan Travis played exceptionally well, running and throwing. Travis went 20-32 for 260 yards, 2 TDs. Running yards were a little harder to come by this week for the ‘Noles than they were last week, but FSU was able to come up with 132 yards on the ground.

Next up for FSU is a Friday night matchup at Louisville on September 16. Don’t fret Jay Noles…the Royals are off that Friday!

Takeaways from Sunday…

1. Jordan Travis looks comfortable and is playing very well. He looks in control of the team and made smart decisions to put/keep FSU in a good position all night. On 3 separate occasions (two of which would have been touchdowns), Travis put the ball where it had to be, but the receivers couldn’t hang on.

2. The offensive line is much of the reason for Travis’ success. They provided Travis ample amount of time to find open receivers and opened up holes for FSU’s backs.

3. Defensive End Jared Verse is good…really good. Not only did he come up with a big sack, but also blocked the would-be game tying extra point.C011CE1A-265B-44AB-9418-A513BB51BC3D5678CB0F-F85E-450F-94FD-54B27764C6D9F3A712C9-FECC-48AD-8B8D-C73A8C715E5B894E9425-F326-40D7-BFF4-EBDF066E05C2BCD1A14D-4A5F-4B73-B2C7-0919BC041314
