‘Ol Diamond Store Art Contest Winners
Christy and Keith Dewise, who now own the Ol’ Diamond Store in Brownsdale (old Raymond Diamond store), asked the JHS Art Department to come up with a contest allowing students to submit their entries of what their vision would be for a painted mural design on the side of the building. On Friday, the winners were announced and each winner received a ribbon with prize.
“The mural contest was a way for us to show support within the community by offering young artists a chance to show their work at a historic location,” owner Keith Dewise stated. “Ol’ Diamond Store was a historic staple to the community and we are excited to bring it back to its original glory thru community involvement and respect for the Diamond family.”
To top it off, the JHS Art Department received a gracious donation of $1000 for taking on the project to paint the mural on the side of the building this spring. This donation will help buy art supplies as needed in the future, especially for students who can’t afford materials. Each student’s artwork that placed will have their designs merged to create the final artwork that will be painted on the side of the building. The winning students, as well as other art students in the art classes, will start painting the mural sometime this Spring. There will be a surprise element that we will add to the building for a reveal of the final mural to be unveiled after completion.
“We are super excited to be a part of this opportunity,” stated Teresa Dobson, Jay High’s art teacher. “All of our participants worked hard to show off their vision, so we are very proud of each and every entry.”
