Prep Football: Week 5

Hard to believe that it’s already week 5 of the high school football season. Jay and Pace both won in week 4, while Milton lost a close one for their homecoming game. Week 5 is full of interesting matchups as well.

Escambia Academy (3-1) @ Jay (3-1)—Game time 7:00pm

Jay dug themselves quite the hole last week at Wewa but fought back to beat the Gators, 30-22. After falling behind 14-0, the Royals settled down and slowly started making the comeback. They had 3 turnovers in the game resulting in 14 of Wewa’s 22 points. Better ball security is a must if the Royals expect to defeat the defending state champions from Canoe. EA comes into Jay hoping to wear down the Royals just as they did last year. Jay hung with EA in the first half in last year’s contest (trailed 21-15) but after a couple of key injuries for the Royals,  Jay struggled to stop the Cougars in the 2nd half.

(Last year, EA defeated Jay 43-23)

Tate (1-3) @ Milton (2-2)—Game time 7:30pm

Milton lost a close game last week to Catholic. On homecoming night for Milton, the Crusaders just made a few more big plays than the Panthers and that was the difference in the ball game. It is important to realize just how close this young Milton team is to being undefeated. A 3 point overtime loss to Choctaw and a 4 point loss to Catholic shows just how ahead of schedule the Panthers are. This week, MHS must turn their attention to Tate. The Aggies are limping into this game on a 3 game losing streak and would love nothing more than to get back to right side of the win/loss column against the Panthers.

(Last year Tate defeating Milton 28-6)

Choctaw (1-3) @ Pace (3-1)—Game time 7:30pm

Pace is coming off a win against winless Washington. After putting up nearly 60 points last week (defeated WHS 58-33), the Patriots’ running game seems to be humming right along. Choctaw is coming into this one on a 2 game losing streak, with their only win coming in a 38-35 victory over Milton in overtime. This game will give us some insight as to how Milton and Pace may matchup later on in the season.

(Last year Choctaw beat Pace 49-21)
