Central Setter Sara Smith Signs Scholarship
Central setter Sara Smith capped a stand-out career for the Jaguar volleyball program last week by inking a letter of intent to play for Jefferson Davis Community College in the fall. Smith, a four-year varsity letterman. She was selected to represent her school in the Subway All-Star Game this season and says she is very excited to have been granted to opportunity to continue her playing career as a member of the War Hawks program.
According to Jefferson Davis Head Coach Steven Dickey, Smith is expected to compete for the job of starting setter. “We really like what she brings from an energy stand point,” he says. “Setters are really hard to find. We have a setter coming back, but we hope Sara can beat her out, because if she can, that will make us even better.”
For her part, Smith says she is just excited to have the opportunity to continue playing the sport that she loves. “I love the sport,” she says. “I love to play. I love to compete. When you love it you just naturally play hard. I just want a chance to play and compete and, hopefully, help make the team better.”
Dickey believes she will. “We are looking forward to having her,” he admits. “We are making some strides and believe we will be better next year than we were this year. Our goal is always to make the (Alabama Community College) conference tournament. We have fallen short of that goal the last couple of years; it’s a very competitive league; but we believe we have a good opportunity this season.”
