SOUTHERN PREPARES TO ROAR FOR 2016

Southern Raceway is finalizing its final plans for the 2016 race season which will kick off on Feb. 27 with the annual Winter Nationals. The official 2016 race schedule will get underway on March 12.While preparing for the upcoming season, Southern Raceway is proud to announce new management for the forthcoming season. Tom and Kim Lowery have taken over the day to day operations of the track as the new Managing Partners.
“We are looking forward to the start of the upcoming racing season,” said Tom Lowery. “We want to make this transition as seamless as possible.
“The changes we are looking to make this season involve officiating positions and many infrastructure upgrades.”
Southern Raceway, the South’s Finest Dirt Track, is proud to announce they will host regular racing in four different classes – modified, street stock, pure stock, and vintage.
Additional special events like the Bay Area Modifieds, Southern Sprint Cars, and the Six Shooter Series will be scheduled throughout the season. The track is open to running the stinger class, but that will depend on car count for that week’s racing schedule.
The Six Shooter series is something new for the Gulf Coast and involves the three area dirt tracks – Flomaton Speedway (Flomaton, Ala.), Northwest Florida Speedway (Baker, Fla.), as well as Southern (Milton, Fla.). Each track will host two races in the Pure Stock Division as well as the NeSmith Street Stocks.
This series will feature the top drivers in both division competing for big prizes and money, which should prove to be a tremendous crowd pleaser.
“This is the first time in a long time that all three tracks have worked in conjunction to provide something of this magnitude to the race fans and everyone at Southern is proud to be part of this three track effort,” said Lowery
Lowery is very excited about the upcoming season as he has been contacted by various organizations heading into the 2016 season.
“I have been contacted by the Southern Vintage Association in the past couple of days as well as adding some other touring events involving late models,” said Lowery. “We want the fans to have an incredible racing experience when they come to Southern.
“We are looking to do this with a variety of events such as the Six Shooter Series, Bay Area Modifieds, the NeSmith Panhandle Challenge Series, Southern Sprint Cars, and much more.
The Bay Area Modifieds are scheduled to make five appearances at the South’s Finest Dirt Track, which will include the 2016 season championship. Fans of the NeSmith Panhandle Challenge Series will be entertained by the NeSmith Late Models on six different occasions.
Lowery also pointed out there would be very limited rule changes, if any at all for the upcoming season.
The Southern Raceway schedule will consist of 25 action packed weeks of racing, which will get underway on March 12 on the South’s fastest action packed three-eighths mile dirt oval.
