National Bullying Prevention Month

October is National Bullying Prevention Month.  Bullying is a problem in schools, the workplace, public venues and online.  The Santa Rosa County Library System, along with communities across the United States, is observing National Bullying Prevention Month to raise awareness and prevent bullying in our community.  Stop by any of the five Santa Rosa County Libraries and sign a pledge to stand up against bullying.  Be a buddy, not a bully.

 

Story Time @ your library®

Story time for 3 to 5-year-olds who are able to attend without a caregiver will be held during the following times from Sept. 22 through Dec. 12:

• 11 on Mondays at the Jay Library

• 11 on Tuesdays at the Navarre Library

• 11:15 on Wednesdays at the Milton Library

• 11:15 on Wednesdays at the Gulf Breeze Library

• 11 on Fridays at the Pace Library

In consideration of all participants, programs will start promptly at the assigned times.

 

Genealogy Research Assistance @ your library® – Milton Library

Mondays 9 a.m. – noon, Tuesdays, 1:30 – 3:30 p.m.

On Mondays from 9 a.m. – noon, Tuesdays from 1:30 – 3:30 p.m., library volunteers are available at the Milton Library located at 5541 Alabama St., to give general genealogy research guidance; one-on-one assistance in using online and print genealogy resources for family researchers; and assistance in filling out ancestral charts and family group records. Beginners and seasoned researchers are invited to use these services. To ensure a volunteer is available to assist you, please call before you visit.

 

Hopeful Hearts @ your library® – Navarre Library

Fridays, 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

A series of meetings for “Hopeful Hearts,” a bereavement support group, will be held at the Navarre Library on Fridays from 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. The weekly sessions will address grief support–following an educational outline– and offer assistance, love and listening ears to those grieving over the loss of a loved one. The meetings will be facilitated by Chaplain Ken Spivey of Emerald Coast Hospice. All materials will be provided, refreshments will be served, and no reservation is required. There is no charge to participate.  The programs are held at the Navarre Library located at 8484 James M. Harvell Rd. in Navarre.

 

Using Directories in Genealogy Research @ your library® – Milton Library

Oct. 7, 5:30 p.m.

Locating a person in a particular place and time is one important objective of genealogical research. Finding people between census years can be a challenge. Directories can sometimes help fill in those gaps. This program will present the genealogical information available in directories as well as the value of using them in conjunction with other genealogy records. Following the presentation, research assistants will assist participants who would like help, and participants may use computers for genealogy research.  This program will be presented at the Milton Library, 5541 Alabama Street in Milton. Participation is free and open to the public, but registration is required. Brown Bag Supper and Family Movie Night @ your library® – Jay Library

Oct. 7, 6 p.m.

Surf over to the Jay Library to enjoy Family Movie Night.  Read the book or watch the movie and you’ll learn that when you come back from a loss, beat the odds and never say never, you find a champion.  Bring a bag supper to enjoy with the movie, but keep it away from the hungry jaws of the sharks.  The event is free and open to the public.  The Jay Library is located at 5259 Booker Lane in Jay. In consideration of all participants, program will start promptly at the assigned time.

 

Youth Chess Club @ your library® – Pace Library

Oct. 1 and 15, 4 – 6 p.m.

The Youth Chess Club will meet the first and third Wednesday each month from 4 – 6 p.m. We provide a fun atmosphere for kids ages 10 – 17 to learn the history and strategies of the game of chess. Players will be matched based on age and skill level. All equipment will be provided. Registration is not required. Please contact the Pace Library for more information. Reading Education Assistance Dogs @ your library® – Navarre Library

Oct. 8, 4 – 5:30 p.m.

Come, Sit, Stay & R.E.A.D. with a furry friend in the Navarre Library Oct. 8, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Registration is required. The program is held on the second Wednesday each month in the Navarre Library located at 8484 James M. Harvell Rd. in Navarre. Contact the Navarre Library for more information or to sign up.

 

Friends of the Milton Library Book Sale – Oct. 10 & 11

Shop for bargain books of all types and subjects, for all ages. Santa Rosa County Library Friends groups regularly hold book sales to raise funds for Santa Rosa libraries – providing supplemental resources for library programs and activities and support for youth programs and special events throughout the year. Page Turners @ your library® – Gulf Breeze Library

Oct. 10, 10:30 a.m.

Join us in the Gulf Breeze Library study room for our fiction book club. Page Turners meets at 10:30 a.m. on the second Friday of every other month. This month’s selection is Tiger Shrimp Tango by Tim Dorsey. There is a limit of 20 participants, so please call the library or drop by to sign up and speak to a staff member today about reserving your copy! Teen Read Week @ your library® – Oct. 12 – 18

Teen Read Week is a national initiative of the American Library Association focused on encouraging teens to read for fun.  Research shows that teens who read for fun have better test scores and are more likely to succeed in the workforce. Reading is free, fun and can be done anywhere! Visit your local library and follow this year’s theme — Turn Dreams Into Reality.

 

Friends of the Navarre Library Board Meeting – Oct. 13, 10:15 a.m.

Oct. 14, 2 p.m.

No need to rebel or take part in a revolution.  Do something fun. Your mission is to come to the Navarre Library for this month’s historical classic movie.  Join fellow movie lovers on the second Tuesday of every month at the Navarre Library located at 8484 James M. You bring your lunch and we’ll provide an exciting presentation from the county extension office’s Master Gardeners’ Speakers’ Bureau. Jen Weber will lead a discussion on herbs. The brown bag lunch program is held the third Wednesday of each month at noon at the Navarre Library located at 8484 James M. Harvell Rd. in Navarre. The program is free and open to the public.

 

Local Author @ your library® – Navarre Library

Oct. 15, 3:30 p.m. and Oct. 20, 3 p.m.

As part of Teen Read Week, meet local author Mark Miller.  According to his website, he writes his books with hopes that his works can reach at-risk teenagers and give adults an insider’s view of the monumental challenges today’s youths face.  Speak with him about his work and get an autograph.  He will have books available for purchase.  The Navarre Library is located at 8484 James M. Oct. 22, 3:30-4:30 p.m.

Krista Schueler, of Emerald Coast Hospice, will explain how hospice services work, what types of services are provided, and when hospice services might be beneficial. The program will be held in the Navarre Library Meeting Room, located at 8484 James M. Harvell Rd. in Navarre.

 

Meet & Greet Navarre High School Football Players @ your library® – Navarre Library

Oct. 25, 11 a.m.

In recognition of National Bullying Prevention Month, members of the Navarre High School football program will visit the Navarre Library to encourage youth to “Be a Buddy, Not a Bully.”  Have your photo taken with a player and get an autograph.  Refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the Navarre Library.  The Navarre Library is located at 8484 James M. Harvell Rd. in Navarre.

 

Chess Tournament @ your library® – Pace Library

Oct. 29, 4 – 6 p.m.

The Pace Library is hosting its first Chess Tournament for youth ages 10 – 17, Wednesday, Oct. 29, from 4 – 6 p.m.  The tournament is open to the first 25 players who sign up.  Register in person at the Pace Library or by calling (850) 981-READ (7323).  Registration is required. The Pace Library is located at 4750 Pace Patriot Blvd. in Pace.

 

Fall Into Fun @ your library® – Oct. 31, 3:30 – 5 p.m.

Visit any of the five Santa Rosa County Libraries located in Gulf Breeze, Jay, Milton, Navarre and Pace from 3:30 – 5 p.m.  Wear your favorite costume and enjoy a story and activities for preschool – 5th grade.
