Jay’s Cross Country Teams Looking Strong for the Season
The Jay High School Cross Country teams competed at T.R. Miller High School Tuesday afternoon with good results. The Boys finished 3rd out of 8 teams with Micah Kemp (17:04) leading all runners. Cody Wolfe (17:59) finished a strong second ahead of the rest. The other Royal runners were Casey Zylstra (20:50), Austin Gonzalez (20:52), and Mark Foley (23:30). The Boys Teams Scores: Milton 32, T.R. Miller 68, Jay 74, Pensacola High 95, Flomaton 141, Straughn 184, Northview 193, and Ernest Ward 313.
On the Girls side, the Lady Royals took the overall team title with a low 38 points, T.R. Miller was second with 53, Pensacola High 63, Milton 91, and Ernest Ward 201. Jessica Thornton led the Jay runners with a time of 22:23, Hannah Whitlock was second for the team in 24:03 followed by Carsen Arrant (24:15), Jenna Thornton (24:33), and Savannah Brown (24:44). Other Jay runners that finished were Jillian Thornton (25:40), Carly Sanders (28:25), Kendra Weeks (30:30), Christa Sanders (30:43), RayAnn Free (31:30), and Katie Stanford (31:59).
Both Head Coaches were pleased with the team’s performance. Boy’s coach Matt Dobson said, “I thought the guys ran strong as a team today and it was good to be so close to second place T.R. Miller. It was their home course and we gave them all they could handle today. Micah ran strong as usual and Cody Wolfe is really showing he has the guts to run with the best.” Girl’s coach, Teresa Dobson said after the meet, “The girls took first place and I’m really proud of the way the younger girls keep stepping up. It was a hilly course today and they ran strong all the way to the end.”
The Jay Cross Country teams are back in action this Saturday, September 20th as they host the J.D. Mac Invitational at the Jay City Park. The coaches report that it looks to be the biggest race ever with twenty teams competing. The girls 5K starts at 8:00am and the boys race at 8:45am.
