September is Prostate Awareness Month

–The American Cancer Society estimates 238,590 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2013. Could you be one of them?

Get to know your risk during Prostate Awareness Month. Practice prevention and get screened. Prostate health screenings are painless and require minimal time. The risk of developing prostate cancer is higher for African American men and males with a family history of prostate cancer. By age 40, all men should talk to their physician about beginning preventive screenings.

Statistics show the five-year survival rate for patients diagnosed at an early stage is nearly 100 percent. The American Cancer Society attributes increased survival rates to early detection and improvements in treatment. Baptist offers the latest innovations in prostate cancer care including da Vinci® minimally-invasive robotic surgery.

“The Baptist Cancer Institute strives to provide our community with convenient access to education as well as quality and compassionate care,” said Donna Johnston, director of cancer services at the Baptist Cancer Institute. “Prevention and early detection lead to a healthy lifestyle and better quality of life.”
