THIS YEAR, SPEND NEW YEAR’S ON THE BEACH
A trio of unique ways to enjoy the holiday in Perdido Key on Florida’s Gulf Coast
PERDIDO KEY, Fla. (Dec. 19, 2012) – When it comes to unique New Year’s Eve getaways, you’ll find running, walking, swimming and dancing in the streets as part of Perdido Key, Florida’s buildup to a happy 2013 at the beach.
To kick off the weekend, start with the 25th annual Make It to the Line Run. Beginning at 10 a.m. Dec. 29, choose between a 4-mile run/walk or a 1-mile fun run for the event, based at the legendary beachfront Flora-Bama Lounge at the Florida-Alabama line on Perdido Key. (A drawing will give free gas cards to 40 participants who have receipts for Perdido Key lodging.)
New Year’s Eve, hop aboard a free beach trolley to the Pensacola Pelican Drop, which draws tens of thousands to downtown Pensacola. The family-friendly entertainment includes live bands on outdoor stages, street performers, food and drinks and a children’s zone, culminating with the 100-foot descent of a half-ton illuminated pelican at midnight.
Free trolleys departing Perdido Key from several locations will run from 5:30 until 7:45 to the Pensacola Pelican Drop. Return trips will depart downtown Pensacola at 10 p.m. and 1 a.m.
Head back to the Flora-Bama Jan. 1 to ring in the new year with the renowned Polar Bear Dip at noon, when hundreds will plunge into the chilly Gulf of Mexico during an annual rite of passage – and often sprint back to shore and warm blankets.
