Jay Slips in Classic

The Jay Royals played fast and hard but came up short in the final minutes of the game.

Early in the game #30 Tanner Paul showed promise with a strong  run for big yardage.  Next a  long pass from Victor Mishoe to Brandon Freeman brought the Royals deep into Baker territory but sadly Jay fumbled.  Baker took over and drove down to the Jay 45, then had to punt after a penalty.

The second drive was also unsuccessful for the Royals coming up short on the 30 yard line.  The Gators  started the second quarter in good field position but Jay got the stop  with a sac by Kris Emerson,  Jay started the next drive on the Baker 25, with a couple of handoffs to Brandon Boutwell the Royals set up  third and 8 from the Baker 40 and gave the ball to  Steven Archer, who  had a 50 yard run down to the Baker 6 yard line. Brandon Boutwell gained three yards, then the quarterback Luke Klavon took it in from 3 yard line to score the only touchdown for Jay.  The PAT failed.

Baker took possession at the 40 and marched down the field and scored and was able to connect on the 2 pt. conversion and the score was 8-6 Baker at the half.

The Royals Varsity took the field while the band played the fight song. One spectator commented that, “now this is the Real McCoy”. Because the first 2 quarters were mostly to give the younger players a chance, the second half was full speed no holds barred.  On the first drive the Gators  were unable to make a first down on the Jay defense line.

The Royals tried a couple of short passes and runs but came up short.  Baker started their second drive on the 49 yard line and 8 plays later they were in the end zone;  6-0 Baker.  Jay had some excitement in the third with a few completed passes and positive yardage on the runs, but ended the quarter scoreless.  Baker was stopped by some key defensive plays by Dylan Sims and AJ Nash.

Pinned down deep in their own territory on 1st down and 25 Royals connected on a 50 yard pass from  quarterback Tate Upton to receiver, Hunter Dillashaw.   A 9 yard run by Ricky Cofield had the Royals knocking on the door of the Gator end zone, but penalties snuffed out the drive for the Royals.  The game ended with a 6-0 score.

Although, the Royals did not end the game on top , they gained experience to carry into the game next Friday against the Rocky Bayou Knights.  The game will be Aug. 31, at the Destin Middle School football field at 7 pm.
