Ernest D. Gay, 63 of Jay, Florida passed away Saturday July 14, 2012. He was born in Brantley, Alabama on September 5, 1948 to Arnold and Cassie Gay. Before retiring he spent most of his adult life farming to provide for his family. He was a loving husband, father and pawpaw. In his spare time he enjoyed going to the mountains, fishing, building bird houses and working in the yard. He is survived by his loving wife, Bernice “Cat” Gay, of Jay, FL., one daughter, Joyce (Wayne) Hawthorne of Jay, one son David (Tracy) Gay of Opp, Alabama, three grandchildren, Austin Hawthorne, Brianna Hawthorne and Ernie Gay, three brothers, Houston Gay (Caroline) of Millard Co. Ga., Edward Gay of Flomaton, Al., Benjamin Gay of Baker, Fl., three sisters Inez Thurman of Frost Proof, Fl., Linzy (Dykes) Strickland of Jay, FL. ,Shirley (Howard) Lail of Milton, Fl., numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Tuesday, July 17, 2012 at New Bethel Baptist Church from 10-12. Funeral services will follow at 12 noon. Bro. Matthew Dobson and Bro. Fredrick Barrow will be officiating. Burial will follow at Pine Level Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ernie Gay, Austin Hawthorne , Keith Strickland, Wesley Strickland , Kaleb Harris, and Travis Gay. Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Cannon, Larry Bates, James Earl Carnley, and Donald Boutwell. The family would like to thank Dr. Eldawy and staff, Jay Hospital and Baptist Hospital for their exceptional care and compassion. Jay Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
