Suspects Arrested After Being Found Stealing From Burned Out House in Milton

On 6/26/2012, at 2250 hours, Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office Deputies were dispatched to the 7300 block of Johnson Road, Milton, FL, in reference to a suspicious activity call.  A citizen had contacted the Sheriff’s Office in reference to two adults with flashlights standing in the driveway of a burned out house.  Deputies located the subjects, who told deputies that they had “broken down” and needed assistance in getting their vehicle started.  The disabled vehicle was parked down the driveway near the burned out house.  The two adult suspects, Janice Poore and Samuel Newton, told deputies that they had permission from the owner of the property to remove lumber, dirt and other miscellaneous items from the residence.

Both suspects told deputies that this was their seventh trip to the house to take items.  Both suspects changed their stories numerous times.  Deputies also located multiple crow bars in plain view inside the suspect vehicle.  Poore gave deputies consent to search her vehicle.  Deputies located copper wire, lumber, a silver serving platter and utensils, flashlights, scrap metal, a piece of furniture, a shovel, a pitchfork, fishing poles, a medicine cabinet, and other miscellaneous items.  These items were taken from inside the residence.

Deputies were able to contact the owner of the property.  The owner stated that he didn’t give anyone permission to be on the property and he wanted to pursue charges. Newton also told deputies that Poore “likes to pilfer and collect” and he didn’t want her going to the residence on her own.

Poore and Newton were both arrested on the following charges and booked into the Santa Rosa County Jail.
