Dispatch had received a call from a nearby residence stating that they could hear the resident at6549 Stanley Circleyelling, and glass breaking inside the residence.  This address is the residence of Benjamin Shehane (W/M, 35 years old) who was wanted by the Sheriff’s Office for Simple Assault, and Burglary with Assault orBattery(felony).

Shehane was also wanted for cutting off his ankle monitor last week which was assigned to him for a previous charge.  When deputies approached the trailer, they noticed that the front window had been broken. Shehane was ordered out of the trailer by deputies, and he responded, “You will have to kill me”.  Numerous other deputies (approximately 25 including SWAT) arrived on scene and a perimeter was established around the residence.   Shehane then began to barricade doors inside the residence and refused to come outside.  Shehane has made previous threats against law enforcement.

The Santa Rosa County SWAT Team responded, as well as negotiators.  Negotiators spoke to Shehane over a public address system, giving him repeated commands over a period of 4 hours.  During this period, Shehane repeatedly told deputies “come in and get me”.

At 0022 hours, the SWAT team began to deploy tear gas into the residence in an attempt to get Shehane to surrender.  After large amounts of tear gas, and approximately 2 hours, Shehane began to yell to deputies that he was going to exit the residence and comply with their commands.  Shehane was taken into custody at 0200 hours and arrested on the active warrants.

No deputies were injured during the standoff.  Shehane is being held at the Santa Rosa County Jail with no bond.
