North Santa Rosa

JHS Concert Band to Perform at MPA

The Jay High Concert Band has been selected to play at the Florida Bandmasters Association Music Performance Assessment (MPA) on Friday, May 4.

The performance is scheduled at 11 am on the Florida State University Campus in the Opperman Music Hall. The Jay Jr/Sr High Concert Band under the direction of Connie Wilkes Pettis will play:

  • Lexington March -K.King
  • Cumberland Cross – C. Stromen
  • Simple Gifts, four Shaker Songs (movements II and IV) – F. Tichelli
The band has not been to state in 49 years.  The Jay High band is one of the 5 junior high/senior high bands in the state to attend state!  Jay and Gulf Breeze are the 2 Santa Rosa bands to go.  All high schools in Santa Rosa qualified to go.

The band made all superiors at District to qualify.  This is a big step for the band, and for director, Connie Pettis.  Both are nervous and excited.  Dr. Lacy Powell, Band director emeritus at USA told the band in a personal clinic, ” that they would make those perfect scores, if they will focus on the music, play in tune and make some “true music”. ”

The band has made all superiors at all competitions and Music Performance Assessments for the past 2 years and  hope to make history with this State trip!
