Baptist Health Care Brings Screening to Cordova Mall

WEAR RED: Baptist Health Care and Cardiology Consultants Bring National Heart Healthy Screening Initiative to Cordova Mall

PENSACOLA, Fla. (Feb. 1, 2012) – Heart disease is the No. 1 cause of death in both women and men in the United States. Baptist Heart & Vascular Care and Cardiology Consultants are teaming with Belk to provide the community with an opportunity to learn about the risk factors, prevention, treatment, signs and symptoms of cardiovascular disease. Please join us for our 9 th annual 2012 Wear Red Day on Friday, Feb. 3.

Free heart risk assessments will be offered from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 3 to 6 p.m., at the entrance to Belk in Cordova Mall. Assessments include a family history review, non-fasting total cholesterol test and blood pressure check.

According to the American Heart Association heart disease claims the lives of one in every three women.  Additionally, 64 percent of women who died suddenly had no previous symptoms. More women die of heart disease than the next three causes of death combined, including all forms of cancer. Ninety percent of women have one or more risk factors for developing the disease.

Knowing your risk factors for heart disease is the first step toward a more healthy life. One of the major risk factors is lack of exercise. The American Heart Association and the American College of Sports Medicine recommend getting at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity five days a week. “I can’t overemphasize the importance of exercise in the prevention of heart disease,” said Luther Carter, M.D., F.A.C.C., cardiologist with Cardiology Consultants. “It sounds simple but studies show exercise will truly improve the odds against having a heart attack.”
