Step Out Walk to Stop Diabetes
The area’s annual Step Out Walk to Stop Diabetes was held Saturday, Nov. 5th, at Bayview Park in Pensacola. Several hundred participants enjoyed the camaraderie of the annual event, seeing old friends, and familiar faces of supporters, as well as people who fight the disease.
The event served as the culmination of months of fundraising in this area. Fundraising monies were turned in at the registration point and after gathering water, t-shirts, and enjoying opening comments – the McGuire’s Pipes and Drums led the participants on its 3 mile walk around the beautiful neighborhoods of East Hill. The local legend band was formed in 1988 under the sponsorship of McGuire’s Irish Pub and Restaurant and is celebrating its 23rd year.
The Pine Forest High School Cheerleaders cheered for the walkers as they made their way through the arch of red and white balloons to begin the walk. Thanks go out to the Pensacola Police Department for their assistance.
At the finish, the cheerleaders continued to cheer and water was passed out from nursing students from Pensacola Christian College.
Refreshments were provided from the generous sponsors of the event so that every cent earned could go to fighting diabetes. The Santa Rosa Medical Center in Milton was one of the sponsors of this event.
Diabetes is an epidemic that strikes every 17 seconds and November is American Diabetes Month. If you would like to learn more about diabetes or you want to make a donation, please go to www.diabetes.org.
