Royals drop 1-3 after loss to rival Hurricanes
The Jay Royals dropped to 1-3 on the season after a loss to the rival Flomaton Hurricanes Friday night. Jay lost key players to injuries following last week’s game at Sneads. Four players were out for this game but hope to return before the season ends. Quarterback Connor Weekes is sidelined with a throwing arm injury but plans to return to the field in another capacity.
The first half belonged to the Hurricanes as they stormed out to a 27-0 lead. Jay only managed to get one stop on defense. Although the Royal’s second drive was strong going to the Hurricane’s 35 yard line.
A big defensive play excited the fans with 5:08 left in the second quarter when #56, Haden McCaskill, got a quarterback sack. Overall the first half of the game was not good for the Royals as they went to the locker room.
Jay didn’t see improvement at the opening of the second half of play when the Hurricanes scored again on their first possession. During this first drive of the third quarter Jay’s #32 Dakota Smith, was sidelined due to an injury to his knee.
In the third quarter a thrilling defensive stop by the Royals’, Coltin Williams #22, slowed the Canes from scoring. The Canes had to go to a pass play and capitalized on the 15 yard touchdown to bring the score to 41-0 with 1:47 left in the third quarter.
The Royals opened the 4th quarter with their first scoring drive. The Royal crowd made some noise as Ricky Cofield ran the ball down the field. He was able to get a big 27 yard run and then a short 3 yards in for the touchdown. The Royals went for two with a handoff to Cofield and made the score 41-8.
The Royals stopped the Canes’ next drive. As Jay gained possession of the ball on the 4 yard line after a big punt for the Canes. The Royals used only 3 plays to score again with Cofield’s longest run of the night, taking the ball 75 yards. The point after was no good leaving the score 41-14.
The Cane’s came back to score again with 47 seconds left in the game. The point after failed when #58, Sawyer Hudson, blocked the kick. The final score for the game was 47-14.
With the area’s leading rusher, Ricky Cofield, the Royal fans expect to see the season turn around. Jay will host South Walton next week for Homecoming so make plans to be a part of this tradition.
