Garth Brooks, Lee Greenwood, Willie Nelson, LeAnn Rimes, Barbara Mandrell, Miley and Billy Ray Cyrus – all performers at the Texaco Country Showdown – throughout the past 30 years.

Our area’s most talented country music singers competed for a chance to join them, as they performed in the district portion of the finals  Saturday night,  August 27, at Farmer’s Opry in Chumuckla.  This national event is designed to find the most promising country music talent in America and to help launch their professional career.

The winner will advance to their respective state competitions held at leading fairs and expositions. The winner there will compete for a $1,000 prize, the State Title and the opportunity to advance to one of five regional finals. The last step is the national finals held in Nashville, TN – of which the winner receives the grand prize of $100,000.

Sandy Wyatt, owner of Farmer’s Opry, along with his Sawmill Band, welcomed a full house and provided most of the backup music for the singers.

Winners were:

1st place – Tiffany Turner, of Fairhope, wife of Fairhope High School coach Kevin Turner

2nd place – Jessica Strenth, 14 year old powerhouse singer from Satsuma, Alabama and a student at Satsuma High School

3rd place – Shelby Glass –  who performed amidst the thunderous encouragement of her family and friends.

Other competitors in the event were Robert Wayne of Navarre; Casey Kearney (and the Boys) – Casey is active duty Air Force; Madison Baird – another 14 year old from Fort Walton; Kerry Kaye – formerly of Jay, now of Appleton, Alabama; Travis Lambert of Milton and Jay resident Barry Lassiter.
