Flora Hendricks Shell

Flora Hendricks Shell, 97, died peacefully on August 23, 2011 surrounded by family and friends.

Flora was born on June 1, 1914 in Blount County, Alabama. She married Leon Shell on March 29, 1947. Flora was a gentle lady who always had a beautiful smile. She was a loving wife, nurturing mother, grandmother and a friend to all. She was also known as an excellent cook, accomplished seamstress and humored many with her quick and lively wit.

Flora is preceded in death by Leon Shell, her husband of 58 years;, her youngest son, Wesley Shell, her parents, brothers, and sisters.

She is survived by one daughter, Emma Mae Shell Mask (Ronnie) of Dadeville, Alabama; one son, Leroy (Mary) Shell of Jay; daughter-in-law, Kathy (Doug) Green of Jay; sister-in-laws, Eloise Snyder of Asheville, N.C.; and Ruby Hendricks of Pace, Fl; eight grandchildren, Michael (Lisa) Blackburn, Leigh Diamond, Kari Shell Lewis, Lee (Kerry) Shell, Rusty (Julie) Mask, Ashlyn Shell, Nick (Nikki) Golden and Seth Shell (Amy Emmett); eight great-grandchildren, Tristan Diamond, Hunter and Tyler Blackburn, Keelin, Colby, Tyler, and Wesleigh Lewis, and Rorie Mask and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Shell has several very special “other children” including Jimmy and Letha McCaskill, Larry and Joyce Baxley, and Lawson and Vickie Baxley.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, August 25, 2011 from 6-9 P.M. at Jay Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 26, 2011 at 11:30 at Mt. Carmel Methodist Church with Rev. John Edwards and Dr. Linnie Howard officiating services. Burial will follow at church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be John Diamond, Mickey Diamond, Clint Baxley, and Mrs. Shell’s grandsons, Michael Blackburn, Lee Shell, Rusty Mask, Nick Golden and Seth Shell.

Honorary pallbearers will be the many friends and close neighbors of Mrs. Flora.

The family would like to thank the nurse and staff at Jay Hospital, Covenant Hospice, caregivers, Betty Vickers, Gale McLin, Debbie McCall, Alice Flowers, and Mary Shell and our many good friends who gave comfort to Mrs. Shell and the family in her last days.

A way to honor the memory of Mrs. Flora Shell is to always be positive and look for the good in everyone and everything.
