East Milton Fire
Milton, FL -by Joy Tsubooka –At 12:37 p.m., Santa Rosa County Emergency Communications received a call regarding a fire in the 5400 block of Woodland Lane involving a large barn-type structure. The building was used as a personal repair shop for the owner’s racing (dirt track and mud trucks) and work vehicles. East Milton, Bagdad, NAS Whiting, Avalon, Skyline and Pace Fire Departments, Florida Forestry Service and the Santa Rosa Sheriff’s office responded to the fire which had flames estimated at 150 feet high. Lifeguard Ambulance Service provided a rehab station and monitored firefighters for heat related illnesses.
Initially the incident commander called for evacuations of homes in a 2,000 foot radius, but the owner was located and confirmed there were no large amounts or fuel or other chemical hazards. Four homes were evacuated as a precaution due to the smoke. The fire was contained at 2 p.m. with firefighters continuing to do mop up until 4 p.m. and they are currently in the process overhauling, or clean up and monitoring of the scene. The approximately 3,000 square foot building and estimated eight vehicles are a total loss. There were no injuries. The Fire Marshall is investigating the cause of the fire.
